Buddy Bench // Happy Hollow // 2017

I am not even really sure how it happened, other than my husband and I are at the school all.the.time and he decided there was a need for Happy Hollow to have a Buddy Bench.

The concept of the Buddy Bench is simple: Students who want to partake in playground games and activities, but may feel hesitant, can take a seat, which signifies to other children on the playground that they may need and extra boost to participate.

This is a very powerful anti-bullying tool. It builds kid's self-esteem to ask others to play with them. I also love that it gives kids the responsibility and tools to be a kind person to someone who may be hesitant to ask to be included.

As with most things in our lives, the hubs couldn't just go out and order a normal buddy bench off the internet -- this is a thing around the world so of course it is on the internet for purchase. Anyway, he loves the uniqueness of our funky little town and took it upon himself to seek out just the right craftsman for the job. We didn't want just any old buddy bench!

So after many trips to the farmers market and oh so many more conversations with  Roger and Karen Roling at Rocky Hill Custom Outdoor Furniture, we had what we knew was going to be the perfect bench for this school!

Then it was time for the big reveal! 

 The principal went over the "rules" of the buddy bench and the kids were BEYOND excited!!

 There she is! Isn't she BEAUTIFUL!!

 The slant represents the 4th grade to Kindergarten grades of Happy Hollow!

You should have head the "oooohs" and "aaaahs" from the kiddos and teachers! They were all so excited for this!

 And then the kids could not get to the stage fast enough to pile up on it!

 We made certain to get a picture with the kids and Roger!

 And then the Hill children decided it was their turn to pose. Goodness, I love them so much!!

 I am so proud of the hubs for making this idea come to life!! It has been a great add to this fantastic school!!!
